I went to San Diego last weekend for Comic-Con International (Nerd-Fest 2014). Here are my take-aways.
- Dressing up is totally worth it. It’s a weird combination of public humiliation and your 15 minutes of fame. We posed for dozens of pictures and Archer fans treated us like we were part of a secret club.
- Walking around a convention in 5-inch heels for four hours requires taking precautions to avoid injury causing you to limp around like an asshole for the five days following the convention.
- I did not take appropriate precautions.
- As my friend pointed out (I don’t have permission to use her name on my blog so we’ll just call her Cameron Diaz), “looking that hot kinda makes the pain worth it, though.”
- Cameron went as Buffy but never had her stake in her hand so she apparently just passed for your average, I-wear-leather-pants-in-the-middle-of-summer-in-San-Diego convention-goer.
- Dress your dog in a matching Superman costume and you are a rockstar.
- It is possible to get sick of hearing people call out “danger zone!” when you walk by.
- Like Halloween, some women seem to use these conventions as an excuse to wear as little as humanly possible.
- They do not serve alcohol in the convention center.
- They should serve alcohol in the convention center.
I am terribly jealous of you right now, but also happy that you had an awesome time! I too made the it’s-better-to-look-good-than-feel-good mistake of wearing healed boots to a convention…and of course wrote about the plight. http://gonecatawampus.com/2014/02/19/adventures-in-cosplay-the-boots-of-death/
Hahaha…I love it! Yeah…after a few hours, I was ready to sit on the sidewalk because there wasn’t an open seat anywhere! My problem resulted in blisters – not cramped toes…hence the hobbling all this week. Shoes will definitely be a factor in next year’s costume! 😉
But you looked great! My next costume will have a very long, full skirt so I’m totally wearing black sneakers underneath 🙂
Genius. What are you going as??
So jealous. I want to go to Comic-Con so bad. There is a comicon where I live, the first one was this year. It was fun, but no where near as awesome as Comic-Con. Also totally jealous of your awesome outfit!
Thanks 🙂 It was an experience but you kinda need to go for more than one day (tickets are really hard to get and I could only get them for Sunday) so that you can go to some of the panels and stuff. Since we were only there one day, we didn’t want to waste time standing in line for panels. Next year! 🙂
You all look great (although I can get how “Danger Zone” weariness could kick in)! I haven’t yet been to a Comic-Con, but I guess I assumed there was alcohol there. There should definitely be alcohol there, if only offered to people in 4 inch plus heels.
Exactly my thoughts! Yes, there are plenty of bars/restaurants in the area surrounding the convention center, but that involves *walking* to get there…which I was pretty much over. I was contemplating sitting on the sidewalk since there was no where else to sit 😉
It’s sad (and now obviously cliche) but “Danger Zone” was the first thing that came to mind. That and Truckasaurus Hands. Looks like you had fun though!
Lots of fun. Yeah…I also got a few “Lana. Lana! LANA!!!” Best line from a fan though…a guy walked up to Steve, pointed to his tactleneck and said “now is that black? Or is it a slightly darker black?” Winner.
Elphaba from Wicked. And Sporadatak will be Elsa from Frozen. Elsaba!!!
Love it!!
This is on my bucket list. And yes, I would wear a costume. Possibly a slutty nurse? lol. Your costumes were awesome. And I agree with point 10 even without being there.
Yeah – maybe next year’s costume will involve a flask? 😉
If I dressed as a gunslinger I could have two six-shooters full of vodka! Yes, Comic Con enhanced!
Wow…you’re really good at the whole contraband booze thing. 😉
I lived in Saudi Arabia for 5 years. I have learned many things. lol
I kinda thought only Sheldon, Leonard, Raj and Howard went to Comic-Con. I guess I was wrong. You make it look fun. Except for the blisters.
Not just for nerds anymore. Well, that’s not an accurate statement. Maybe there are just more nerds.
I guess a guy should start watching Archer. I’m beginning to feel like I’ve missed out on something here…
It’s inappropriately awesome. Definitely give it a try!
